The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste
Stuttgart) has a long tradition in typography and type design. People like F.H. Ernst
Schneidler (1882-1956) and Kurt Weidemann (1922-2011) have taught here and influenced
several generations of designers.
Today's type lab/workshop for typography and type design moves between traditional
and contemporary methods, comprising analogue as well as digital technologies. Projects
and courses range from typographic basics, letterpress experiments, coding/generative
typography, to type design. For further research, the workshop holds a small library of type-
related publications and a collection of historic lead and wood letters.
Since 2012 the workshop is run by Stefanie Schwarz. She studied communication design
in Germany, the United States and for her Master's degree at Central Saint Martins in London.
In 2013 Stefanie co-founded the typographic research lab Open2Type.
